cecret lake

For Labor Day we decided to spend the beautiful day hiking to Cecret Lake near Alta. We were much more prepared for a hike this time...jackets for the kids because it was a bit chilly in the morning, no kids in flip flops, bottled water, and a picnic lunch to enjoy at the top.

This hike was a tad easier. I don't know if it is because we are so in shape from the last hike we did or if it is because it is a tad shorter. I would like to think it was the former.

We saw this little guy right off the bat and it was just the first of some of the abundant wildlife we saw during our adventure.

Liam was obsessed with all the rocks along the trail. He said he wanted to pick up every single one and take it to the top. He would find flattish ones that he said were "perfect" and place them in his hat that he turned into a basket. I told him repeatedly that there would be plenty of rocks at the top but he was determined to carry them all the way up the steepish terrain. Of course that meant that Luke had to do it too but he told me that he was doing it so he could build his muscles.

Our beautiful destination:

These two were twinners and they didn't even realize it. I don't think anyone had a question about what team we root for on game days.

Luke wanted this huge walking stick that was in the water. It was a little ways out in the lake and he figured out that if he threw rocks in front of the stick that the waves would push it toward the shore. It took a while but he did it. Then once he took it out of the lake, Liam threw it back in so Luke had to get it out again. He enlisted everyone to help so it wouldn't take so long to get it back.

While the boys were throwing stuff in the lake I took the opportunity to teach them about the ripple effect. I had them look at the ripples and see how far they could go. I told them that if we are nice, then other people will want to be nice and it could keep going and going and all that niceness would be spread to so many people. I also told them that the same thing could happen if we did mean things so wouldn't it be better to be responsible for goodness being spread around than being mean? I got a chorus of "Uh-huh's" and nods of the head so Idon't know if they retained any of it, but maybe it is tucked it away in the recesses of their brains and will remember why it is better to be nice when they have the choice.

This little guy loved our spot because of all the leftover crumbs that were on our blanket. While we were off exploring he helped himself. We also saw some birds that hopped over and Luke found a couple salamanders in the water.

One of my favorite memories was when Liam threw his hat into the air and Luke thought it was a rock. He looked at it coming down and it startled him and he let out a big "OH!" We all had a good laugh over that one.

The walk down was beautiful. We saw so many wildflowers and reminders that autumn is on its way. I really wanted to see a moose but I didn't see one. Justin saw one but Justin can find a white pompom in a blizzard and I don't have that capability so I will have to wait to see if I spot one the next time.

We did see an eagle though which was pretty cool.

The boys are already talking about the next hike but they want to go up Millcreek so we can take Maisy. I say bring it on!

1-0

The Herriman Mity Mites A1 team had their season opener on Saturday against Jordan High. They won!

Nick had a great game. He caught two passes and had a fumble recovery. Maybe his mohawk has secret super powers or something. I love how fired up these boys get when they are playing well--it is almost electric.

You would think with all the football I watch I would understand the game better. Well, I don't. I know what a touchdown is and the basic football terms, but I really want to get to know the nitty gritty. This is my goal this year.

During the game Andrew and Luke kept busy with playing at the park and having a bubble blowing contest. Liam was content sitting on my dad's lap playing his leapster.

I think Andrew won.

as promised

I finally took a deep breath and took pictures of Nick's hair.

Now I really was okay with the idea of Nick getting a mohawk. Just imagine however, only getting two hours of sleep after a night shift, laying down for a minute after dropping off Andrew at scouts, and being ambushed with this...

It looked fine in the front after some styling but the back and side were still gross. It was way too wide and bushy and so not cute--kindof like a malformed chia pet. He even had his football pictures done with this monstrosity on his head.

We took Nick to Great Clips on Saturday to get it fixed. Much better...skinnier, shorter...and I think it is starting to grow on me.

rave reviews

I made this for dinner last night and I was praised over and over. I am not sure where I found the recipe but I thought I would pass it on so you too can be deemed Champion of the Kitchen.

SHREDDED LIME CHICKEN

4-5 boneless chicken breasts
1 1/2 cup sprite
1/2-1 t. cumin
1/2 t. salt
1/2 t. pepper
2 limes

Cook in a crockpot on medium heat for 6-8 hours or until chicken falls apart with a fork. Stir in the juice of two limes before serving.

We made tacos with this delighful chicken and we have enough left over to use for nachos or quesadillas another night. I also served this:

CILANTRO LIME RICE

1 c. white rice
2 c. chicken broth
1 T. lime juice
1 garlic clove
1 pinch salt
1/2 c. fresh cilantro

Cook rice according to package directions using broth instead of water. When done, fluff with a fork and add other ingredients.

Muy bien!

Five. Cinco. High five. Cinq. Give me FIVE! Cinque. Utes by 5! Funf. 12345. 5!

Liam is now officially 5 years old. He is thrilled to be able to answer the question of "How old are you?" with a full palm showing.

He went to school that morning and shared cupcakes with his class. After lunch Justin and I took him to Red Robin for lunch.

He just wanted a balloon that he could blow up himself instead of having it blown up with helium. "I don't want a balloon with a string," he said.

We then headed over to the store to get stuff for dinner. He wanted psghetti and cake. He chose rainbow chip cake with rainbow chip frosting and birthday cake ice cream with rainbow chips. He decided his scooter needed to be taken out for a spin so he rode all over the place while I walked behind with Maisy. If I got in front of him he would tell me quite forcefully that he needed to be in front.

Liam, you are quite the individual packed into a little boy body. You are inquisitive and absolutely love technology. For your birthday you asked for an ipod, a cell phone, a Nintendo DS, a tv for your room, and a kitty. You even went as far as telling me that I needed to move our t.v. and t.v stand (that you call the R.C. Willey) out of the living room into your room and put a smaller t.v. in the living room. You did not get any of these items but you did get a leapster and a computer that you plug into the main computer to play some awesome games. Luckily these were good enough to make you forget about all the other things you asked for. Maybe next year?

You are my little buddy and will go anywhere with me without complaining. I feel bad that I drag you around so many places and I don't set up playdates for you more. Luckily there are some nice parents out there that want you to come a play at their house. I am glad that you are in preschool to give you the interaction that you need from someone other than your mom because although we play together, I run out of energy much, much faster than another 5 year old boy.

You are worried that I will leave you. Whenever I get out of the car or we are going somewhere and I open the door you get nervous and yell "DON'T LEAVE ME!" I always tell you that I wouldn't and couldn't ever leave you. I don't know where this fear comes from since I have never left you or your brothers but I hope that somewhere in your young life I have not given you a serious complex about this and you can grow out of this phase. I don't like it when you worry!

You are definately becoming your own person. Outfits that I would put you in even just 6 months ago are now given a cry of disapproval. Your favorite thing as of late are sport shorts. You carefully chose the basketball tshirt today and told me you wanted to wear it when you passed out your cupcakes at school. When I said that it was okay, you yelled "YAY!" You used to eat pretty much anything we put in front of you but now you vehemently refuse certain foods, would rather eat cookies for breakfast, and have just a few nibbles of dinner before you proclaim that you are full.

You laugh and sing a good part of the day. You are happy go lucky and emanate happiness. You skip when you walk. You give awesome hugs. You get so excited to see people and just assume that people are just as excited to see you so you run and jump into their arms and glom onto their neck. You are one very loved 5 year old boy.

so it begins

It is not so much football season anymore in our home, it is more like football year. No matter what, Justin or Nick can find a game or a show or something that pertains to football on the t.v.--no matter what time of year it is.

So when I say football season has started in our home, I use the term very loosely.

Nick had his first scrimmage game on Saturday against Bingham. Too bad that we lost but the boys played a good game.

Nick wanted to be #44 again or his baseball number, good old #9, but the league goofed up and didn't get any of the boys the numbers they wanted so this year he is #84. Apparently this was a big deal and Justin was on the internet trying to find NFL and NCAA players of clout that had the same number to prove to Nick that it is an okay number. I just think he looks super cute in the uniform.

I guess another tradition for football is to get a mohawk. Again, something that I don't understand. There are cute mohawks and there are hideous mohawks. I came home yesterday to find that Justin had given Nick a mohawk of the hideous variety. I still cannot come to bring myself to take a picture of it because it is awful. It looks like a dead raccoon has been mounted on his head. I will post one later when I can look at his head without vomiting. So fair warning for things to come.

Wish us luck for his first official game on Saturday against Jordan! Go Mustangs!
